Top 7 Benefits to Exercising Outside

Looking to get the most out of your workout? Consider taking it outside!

  1. Sunshine Does a Body Good - The combination of fresh air and natural vitamin D while you exercise can make for an extra great boost to your immune system and overall wellness.

  2. Stress Less - Being in nature during your workout can have a positive impact on your stress levels; over 100 research studies have found decreases in stress after participants completed activities outside.

  3. Workout Longer Without Even Realizing It - Research also suggests that working out in outdoor, green spaces can decrease brain fatigue and quiet the mind. It can also help take your mind off things so you work out longer. 15 minutes in nature is likely to go by much quicker than 15 minutes on a treadmill staring at a wall.

  4. Burn More Calories - Research shows that people who run or walk outside burn an average of 10% more calories than people who run or walk on the treadmill.

  5. Enjoy a Self-Esteem Boost - Nature impacts the brain and our wellbeing in so many ways! British researchers found that exercising outdoors may improve self-esteem as well as have a positive effect on mood.

  6. Happiness and Well-Being for the WIN - In a number of research studies, the participants who exercised outside scored higher on ratings of vitality, energy, and mood, and lower in depression and anger than participants who exercised inside.

When it comes to exercising outside - especially in the summer and that much more so if you’re in a state like hot, humid ’n sunny Florida, there are some key Do’s and Dont’s to adhere to for safety!

  • DO protect yourself from the sun if you’re exercising outside! Remember your sun protection, even if it’s cloudy out! Go for sweat-proof sunscreen, and reapply as directed for optimal sun protection.

  • DO stay hydrated, and Don’t forget your electrolytes! Heavy sweating can cause a major loss of electrolytes. If you are engaging in intense exercise like one of our Altamonte Springs HIIT classes, be sure you recover your lost electrolytes. Also be sure to opt for something without added sugars or artificial stuff.

  • DO wear proper clothing and shoes! If you’re going to be working up a sweat outside, skip the pollster and dark colors and choose cotton blends, breathable synthetics, and lighter colors instead. Also be sure to wear supportive walking, running, or cross-training shoes depending on your workout. Good shoes can help protect against injury.

  • DO consider the time of day when you workout! We recommend avoiding the 11am-3pm window as the sun and heat tend to be most intense then!

  • DON’T wait until you’re thirsty to hydrate! Did you know that by the time you start to feel thirsty, you’ve typically already lost as much as 1-2% of your body’s water content? Drink water before, during, and after your workout, and consider incorporating electrolytes as well to replenish, especially if you end up sweating a lot.

  • DO consider the needs and well-being of your furry friends! Keep in mind that dogs feel the heat even more than we do, so if you’re bringing them along for a run or other outdoor workout, aim for a cooler time of day and be sure to keep them hydrated!
