Which Diet Should I Choose?

When it comes to achieving your fitness goals and maintaining a healthy body, both exercise and nutrition are essential. You can’t out-exercise a bad diet though, despite what some people believe. In actuality, when it comes to getting your desired results, 80% of the job is all about nutrition, with exercise and rest forming the remainder. The bottom line is that without a solid diet plan tailored around your specific goals, no amount of exercise alone will get you where you want to be.

This is partly why diets (and dieting) form part of an immense industry. With the pandemic forcing the entire world to rethink health & wellbeing, diets are certainly going to play an even more significant role for many of us as part of our daily lives – if they aren’t already.

Where to start?

If you’ve never measured your food intake or counted your calories before, the concept of dieting can be overwhelming. There are so many diets to choose from Paleo, Keto, Dairy-free, Low-Fat, Vegan, to name a few; and more often than not, individuals choose diets that may be popular, but not necessarily right for their need – or for long term results and a sustainable lifestyle!

For example, a keto diet is an eating plan that focuses on foods that provide a lot of healthful fats, good amounts of protein, and very few carbohydrates. The idea is that by depleting the body of its sugar reserves, it will start to break down fat for energy. While a ketogenic diet can have a range of health benefits for specific issues, and can support weight loss and reduce blood sugar levels, like many other diets it can often be hard-going and very strict in terms of what you can and cannot eat. It can be very hard to maintain in the long term, and doesn’t offer the balance many people need to succeed long term with both their weight management and overall health goals.

Rigid diets can often be difficult to manage, and unsustainable for many. And although consuming high levels of sugar and processed foods can be detrimental to your long-term health, it can be equally as dangerous to suddenly eliminate key food groups and cycle in-and-out of different diets. One especially negative – and sadly very common – mistake that many people make is restrictive yo-yo dieting.

Negative effects of yo-yo dieting include:

· Increased appetite leads to more weight gain over time

· Higher body fat percentage

· It can lead to muscle loss

· Weight gain leads to fatty liver

· An increased risk of diabetes

· An increased risk of heart disease

· It can increase blood pressure

· It can cause frustration

· Bad for metabolism

· Short-term thinking prevents long-term lifestyle changes
